Greenock has come a long way since its small fishing town beginnings and became world famous for Sugar and Ships and boasted the oldest shipbuilding business in the world dating back to 1711. Sadly the days of heavy industry have long gone, although the recent revival of Ferguson's Ship Yard in Port Glasgow has kept shipbuilding alive in the area. Greenock and Inverclyde also played a huge roll in the 80s and 90s with blue chip such as IBM setting up in the area offering much needed alternative employment just when the last of the big shipbuilders were closing their doors for the last time. The clearing of the old docks however opened up the waterfront area, and made the views and area more accessible, and now visitors can walk along the waterfront while taking in the spectacular scenery. Greenock has great road and rail links with the centre of Glasgow being reached in just over half an hour. The river Clyde has always been important to Greenock and Glasgow, and today Ocean Terminal Greenock has become a major destination for cruise ship visitors from all over the world.

There are plenty of local attractions to keep visitors amused while docked at Ocean Terminal Greenock, Glasgow. The views from Tower Hill, Lyle Hill and from Gourock Esplanade are some of finest in Scotland. Newark Castle is a hidden gem, The McLean Museum and some of the most historic buildings in Greenock such as the Custom House (1817), Mariners Homes (1850) and Dutch Gable House (1755) are also worth seeing, along with the old Sugar Sheds. In the centre of Greenock you can not help notice Victoria Tower part of The Municipal Buildings which was completed in 1866 and stands 245 feet tall. For nature lovers Loch Thom and Lunderston Bay have proved popular with locals and visitors for many years. The Clyde and Greenock has seen a revival in recent years with all the Cruise ships arriving, but the past has not been forgotten and the PS Waverly the worlds last sea going paddle steamer still does daily cruises on the Clyde from late spring to early autumn.
